Eric Abell began genealogy work in 1998 and is now the Family History Center (FHC) director, since July 2007. Eric researches mainly England and a little Scotland, (where he needs a lot of help). Eric’s forte is the technical side--electronic sources, PAF and data management. Prior to his 25 years as a commercial beekeeper, Eric was in education.
Janice L. Cushman, AG® is an avid genealogist, a professional researcher and instructor, who specializes in British Isles, Canada, and U.S. research. Janice has the Family History Certificate (Professional Option) from Brigham Young University and is an Accredited Genealogist® professional in English research. She is the author of Donaghy Family History: From Ireland to Canada. Janice served as the Director of the Calgary Family History Center for four years and currently serves at the Center as the Technical Services Coordinator.
Bob Darlington was always interested in history. He is now retired after serving 37 years in the navy. His desire to learn more of his ancestors, was ignited when he came across the marriage record of his grandparents in an old family bible. Since 1982 between rounds of golf, he has devoted countless hours to seeking information both on his Manitoba Scottish lineage and all the others too.
Gord Hamilton has been involved in Family History fro about 4 years since getting the ‘bug’ from his father. He volunteered at the Fort McMurray FHC for 2 years prior to relocationg to Cowichan Bay. So far he has concentrated on Ontario and Southern England in his reasearch.
Karen Inkster currently works at Royal Roads University as the Ex-Cadet Oral History Project Coordinator. She is completing her MA in Professional Communication where she is researching how to use photos in oral history interviews to elicit memory. Karen had a book published in 2006 entitled “Voices from the Past: A History of North Roe”, a social history about the village in Scotland where her great-grandfather was born.
Julie Keyes got bitten by the "genealogy bug" about seven years ago and is experienced in England, BC and Ontario research. She is currently serving as the Assistant FHC Director in Victoria. Six months of full-time computer courses at Camosun College in 2002 also gave her a great advantage and has been useful when helping others.
Carol Kredt has always been fascinated by family history and has been collecting it since about 1980. Carol describes herself as a mutt, with family history in places as far flung as the Phillipines, Spain, Germany and the US. Her main focus of research is the United States and Germany. She is a retired high-school teacher eager to share her knowledge of German research.
Liane Lyle is a high-school French and socials teacher with a passion for genealogy, which she has been doing for over 20 years; mainly in Quebec, the US and England. Liane has served in a variety of positions in the Family History Centre, mainly in training positions and enjoys teaching beginners the most. She has also served on the organizing committee for the last four Family History Seminars in Victoria.
Janet Lyon fell in love with genealogy listening to her great-aunt Laura who told her about thier ancestors as they swing in a hammock together. Her family hails from the “Foreign Protestants” and the “Planters” from Nova Scotia, stretching back to the Puritans in the US, England, and the Rhine River area. Janet volunteers in the Duncan Family History Centre and teaches the church youth every weekday morning before they go to school.
Gillian Mead has been actively researching her family history for over thirty years and has documentation on over 3000 ancestors. She has been a member of the volunteer staff at the Victoria Family History Centre for the past six years, regularly working on a bi-weekly basis on Saturday mornings. Her areas of expertise include both England and the United States. Her cheerful attitude, helpfulness and depth of knowledge are a blessing to all who get to work with her.
Donna Mollin has been working at the UVic library for almost 20 years. Her career there includes positions in the Audio-Visual TV section, the media resources, and IT-technical services. Donna’s interest in family history began at least 10 years ago. A few years ago, she helped do the genealogy for the mayor of a small town in Alberta. Niels Nohr has had his own photography and computer programming business for several years. Combining the two talents makes him an expert on manipulating and importing pictures. He is also a volunteer in the Victoria Family History Centre.
Carroll Penner has recently accepted the position of training people in Indexing and so is the ideal candidate to teach the indexing class at the seminar. She has taught beginner classes at the Victoria Family History Center for several years while serving as Staff Trainer. The binder system which she will present is one she uses that allows for the logical organization of all the information one collects in this research.
Jeannine Powell has been doing genealogy for the past 13 years: two of those years in full-time intensive research. She has been accused of being somewhat obsessive/compulsive about Family History. It's genetic! She has volunteered at both the Victoria and Duncan FHC and is the webmistress for the Genealogy Helplist Canada and The County of Red Deer GenWeb on the internet. She also teaches genealogy courses for the Cowichan Community Centre Adult Education and Elder College programs in Duncan.
Beverley A. Kenneth W. Rees, is a family historian with more than 30 years experience, as well as a family history librarian, workshop instructor, speaker, researcher, and compiler. His areas of expertise include Loyalists, US and Canadian research.
Pat Remley has always been interested in researching her family history, but has been a serious researcher for over ten years, including six years as Staff Trainer and Patron Services Co-ordinator of Victoria FHC. She has taught many classes including Orientation; Getting Started and Family Search at the Victoria FHC as well as classes at VGS Family History Fairs. Art Robinson has spent many years researching his family history mainly in Ontario and Quebec. He has found some interesting research tools and sites that he would love to share.
Mark Ruttan works with computers all day and serves in the Family History Centre in Duncan. He has compiled large family trees all on computer programs and enjoys helping others do the same.
Carol Stiles is the Director of the Duncan Family History Centre and formerly served as the Technical Services Director for the Victoria Family History Centre for six years. Since 1970, she has researched her ancestors and those of her husband in Quebec, Ontario, England and the US. She has taught classes on research in those areas as well as how to effectively use the Internet.
Barry Stewart has spent so many years doing family history that it’s scary to count them! He is well-known in the Victoria area for his volunteer work as director in the FHC, which service spanned many years. Barry has invested a lot of time researching Italian records for his wife’s lineage and is happy to share with you the tips he has picked up over the years.
Ann ten Cate has been a reference archivist at the B.C. Archives for the last 17 years. Prior to her move to the West Coast, she worked in Ontario for the Anglican Church of Canada Archives, the City of Toronto Archives and the Region of Peel Archives. She has managed to translate a degree in History and English into a full-time career in archives and her greatest satisfaction comes from helping people who are new to archives find nuggets of knowledge, whether they relate to their family or other research projects.
Leif Tompa has always been interested in history, having received his first picture book of history before grade one. He started his Finnish research at age 15 when on a year long European tour. His parents began collecting information at that time, and a genealogist was born! His mother is of Swedish extraction, though they had lived in Finland for many generations. His father is Hungarian, so they spent time in Hungary, looking in old church books, some documents 300 years old!
Nancy Watson is retired from her position as a technical writer and trainer for Hewlett-Packard. Her interest in genealogy goes back to her youth. As an adult, when not teaching, she was roaming the countryside finding graves, homesteads, and ancestral “haunts.” Nancy edited and published one of the first e-books back in 1990. The book, an autobiography of her grandfather, is still getting hits from genealogists around the country. She has now published several other books and stories on the web. Nancy will help you to use and publish via Ancestry.com or other family history sites or help you to produce a hard copy version of your story.
Patricia White has been researching her family history in various counties throughout England over the past four years. In her quest, she has explored and examined the numerous records available to researchers. She is eager to share her expertise with you.
Pamela White has been doing Genealogy research for over 20 years. She has been working with computers to support her research since 1991, when she assisted the Bracebridge Family History Centre in setting up their first computers. Pam volunteers at the Family History Centre in Victoria at least twice a month. Her specialties are Scotland and Ontario.
Dirk Yzenbrandt describes himself as a Dutch citizen with deep roots to all parts of the Netherlands. He has been working on his own genealogy for several years.
